Tips From the Dive Fam: What other NAUI Divers would tell a Nervous New Diver

Tips From the NAUI Dive Fam:
'What would NAUI Divers tell a Nervous, New Diver?'

Starting your scuba diving journey is a big step! It’s exciting, empowering, and yes, sometimes a little intimidating. Whether it’s the first breath underwater or the fear of the unknown, every diver remembers those early jitters.

That’s why we recently turned to our NAUI community on Instagram and Facebook and asked:

“What advice would you give to a new diver who may be a little nervous about completing their NAUI Open Water Certification?”

And wow, did you all deliver! The NAUI community showed up with humor, heart, and real talk. Here are some of our favorite responses and what they mean for anyone getting ready to Back-Roll into their certification:

“Your certification is a license to learn. Most of what you will learn, you’ll learn it after you get certified.”

This one is gold. Certification is just the beginning! No one expects you to know everything right away. The best divers never stop learning—so take the pressure off yourself and think of this as your launch point, not your final exam.

“If it’s a rental wetsuit, someone probably peed in it. Relax!”

Okay, we had to laugh at this one—and you probably did too! Sometimes, a little humor is the best way to break the tension. Diving is serious, but it’s also fun, and a lighthearted mindset can go a long way in easing those first-dive nerves.

“Scuba is an amazing adventure, so embrace the experience and enjoy the underwater world.”

Exactly! When you focus on the wonder of it all—the coral reefs, marine life, the weightlessness—you’ll find that fear tends to fade into fascination.

“Take the leap! It is an experience that will change your life.”

“It could be bad, but it’s more likely to be an incredible experience that changes your life.”

These two hit home. Yes, anything new comes with uncertainty, but for most of us, scuba diving opens doors to unforgettable memories, friendships, and a deep connection with the ocean.

“NAUI DiveMaster 🫡 It’s scary on the surface but a different planet underneath.”

Surface stress is totally normal. But the moment you descend, everything changes. It’s calm. It’s quiet. It’s like stepping into another world. A lot of divers even say it’s often where nervousness melts away.

Also, a special shoutout to NAUI Professionals! Thank you for helping new divers overcome fear by providing them the education to explore the underwater world safely.

“The underwater world is just as scary as land, and you’ve lived every day still.”

This is a perspective shift that really hits. The ocean might seem intimidating, but so is life topside sometimes! You’ve already overcome so much; diving is just another step forward.

“Take a moment to breathe and clear your head if you find yourself becoming stressed.”

Simple. Powerful. And completely in line with NAUI training. Controlled breathing and mindfulness are key skills for diving—and for life, honestly.

“What’s the worst that can happen? 😂”

Ah yes, a little sarcasm to lighten the mood. But even this joking comment reminds us that fear often exaggerates reality. With proper training and support, diving is very safe—and even more rewarding.

“We’re here to help! Don’t be afraid to ask to practice a skill over and over again.”

This one might be our favorite. At NAUI, we believe in mastery through practice. If you need more time, take it. If you need to repeat a skill, ask. That’s what instructors and Divemasters are here for—your success and confidence.

To all our future NAUI divers:

You are not alone. Every diver—no matter how experienced—was once in your fins. The nerves are normal, and the dive family has your back. Be patient with yourself, communicate with your instructor, and give yourself the grace to grow.

You’re about to experience something truly amazing.
