Underwater Beach Clean-up
Recently I've been thinking about how I want to get back into the community service thing. About 5 or 6 years ago, I was a full-time volunteer. It was one of those once in a lifetime sort of opportunities and I was financially able to go to college full-time and volunteer full-time. It was in that period of time that I also got scuba certified.
But a lot has happened since then. I moved around a little bit. I joined the Air Force, got married, and we had a baby almost 2 years ago. Life got busy.
But, I fell in love with diving, and I really found myself in that period of time spent serving the community. So, I've been trying to find a good organization to offer some of my free time to. I looked into Habitat for Humanity, but they aren't building anything in my area for the foreseeable future. And every time my wife tried to call an organization about volunteering no one answers the phone.
But I don't just want to go volunteer for something that my heart isn't truly in to. My heart is in the ocean - surfing and diving. I want to make the world a better place by taking care of our natural resources in the ocean.
So...the whole point of this blog entry: I want to start up a scuba beach clean-up. It would hit two birds with one stone: We would get to dive AND we get to improve our natural aquatic resources. Only one problem...I have NO idea on how to start organizing something official.
Anyone have any ideas? I am in South Carolina (in the middle of the state). I would prefer going over to the coast, but I'm game for diving in lakes and rivers to do some cleaning up.
